📝 Quick summary of key information
What is a starfish and how do its soft colors light up the ocean floor?
The starfish is a fascinating sea creature. It has a star-shaped body with five arms, but some can have more. You can often find it on the ocean floor, stuck to rocks or gently walking on the sand.
Starfish have soft and varied colors, like pink, orange, or blue. Underwater, these colors seem to glow, lighting up the ocean floor like little magic lanterns. This makes them even more beautiful and mysterious.
Sea stars are very helpful in their environment. They eat shellfish and tiny animals, helping to keep the oceans balanced. They move slowly using thousands of little feet under their arms.
Starfish are important for other sea animals. They serve as food for some fish and crabs. They also play a key role in the food chain, helping to keep the oceans healthy.

Starfish Estella and the Glow of the Depths
What is a starfish and how do its soft colors light up the ocean floor?
Meeting Starfish Estella
After laughing a lot with the clownfish Paco, Sirio and Sirena, two curious young dolphins, were heading towards the Turtle Garden. The clownfish Paco had entertained them with his jokes and acrobatic dance in the heart of the Enchanted Reef (1). His bright colors, like neon orange and white, made him a shining sight to see among the variety of colorful algae and anemones. The two dolphins had learned how the bright colors of clownfish not only helped to attract other creatures (2) for playful games, but also helped to protect them from predators.
Not long after, they found a peaceful place. Sea turtles came to rest and share their stories with the younger ones. That's where they met Starfish Estella. Estella moved gently over the rocks and sand with her five delicate orange arms with touches of white, using her thousands of tiny tube feet called podias.
Sirio, amazed, says:
« Hi, Starfish Estella! You are very pretty and curious. »
Starfish Estella, with a gentle smile, says:
« Thank you, Sirio. I am Estella. »
Sirena, curious, asks then:
« You are really very beautiful, Starfish Estella! Why are your arms orange and white? »
Starfish Estella, with a gentle smile, explains:
« My colors help other creatures. They draw them close to me. »
A shiny piece of coral catches the dolphins' attention. Starfish Estella explains that the coral's light helps to brighten the ocean floor and attract other creatures. She then tells them how her own light, though subtle (3), adds to the beauty and balance (4) of the ocean.
Light and Underwater Life
Starfish Estella told them how she helps clean the ocean floor by eating small creatures and bits of trash. She helps keep the underwater world healthy and beautiful.
Starfish Estella, with a gentle smile, explains:
« My soft colors and gentle light attract sea creatures. »
Starfish Estella, with a gentle smile, adds: « They help keep the ocean balanced (5). »
Sirio, curious, asks:
« How do you do that, Starfish Estella? »
Starfish Estella says: « I glow softly and guide little creatures to places where they can find food. By doing this, I help keep the ocean balanced. For example, I help them find seaweed and tiny animals to eat. Then, as these little creatures grow, they give nutrients (6) to the corals. »
Sirena, amazed, said:
« This is amazing! »
After listening to Starfish Estella and accepting the sparkling piece of coral, Sirio and Sirena headed off on a new adventure, inspired by the stories of their new friend. They wondered what other wonders they might discover. Near the Starfish Cliff, they met Shark Rocco. It was explained to Sirio and Sirena that Shark Rocco, with his strength, played a very important role in keeping the ocean in balance. He helped to remove sick or weak species (7), which kept the marine ecosystem healthy. Together, they continued to explore the wonders of the ocean, ready to discover new secrets and protect their enchanted world.
