📝 Quick summary of key information

Why can Hilda the Owl see so well in the dark?

The tawny owl is a fascinating bird that lives mainly at night. It is known for its big round eyes and soft feathers. But what makes it really special is its ability to see perfectly in the dark.

To see so well in the dark, the little owl has very special eyes. Its pupils can grow very big to let in more light. Also, its eyes are shaped like tubes, which helps it catch even more light.

This night vision is very useful for the tawny owl. It helps her hunt small animals like mice and insects, even when it is very dark. It also helps her avoid dangers and protect herself from predators.

The tawny owl lives in forests and woods. It spends its days sleeping in hollow trees or nest boxes. At night, it comes out to hunt and explore its territory. It is often alone and prefers to fly silently to surprise its prey.

Hilda the Owl and the Secrets of the Night

Why can Hilda the Owl see so well in the dark ?

Meeting Hilda

After discovering Picolo, the green woodpecker, and learning how he talks to the trees by tapping their bark(1), Forestin and Fleurie continue their exploration. They listen carefully to the stories the trees tell through their sounds and movements. They found out that each tree has a unique voice and secrets to share. One evening, as the sun sets and the moon begins to light up the forest, the two fawns hear a mysterious hoot(2). Curious, they decide to follow the sound, hoping to find a new adventure. They walk softly between the trees, their eyes adjusting to the dim light(3). Little by little, they spot a silhouette perched(4) on a branch. It's Hilda the Owl, watching them with her big, sharp eyes. Hilda lives in an old hollow oak tree.

Forestin, curious, asks:
« Hilda the Owl, what are you doing here, in this hollow tree? »

Fleurie, curious, asks then:
« Why do your eyes shine like that? »

Hilda the Owl, with a wise and mysterious voice, explains:
« I watch over the forest. My eyes see well in the dark. »

Fleurie, curious, asks:
« How do you see at night? »

Hilda the Owl explains then: « I have facial discs. They amplify sounds to better locate my prey(5). It's like parabolic antennas. »

The two friends are amazed by Hilda the Owl's explanations. They want to know more about the nightlife of animals. That's when Hilda the Owl tells them about her magic book, which contains clues about the forest's treasure.

The Secrets of the Mysterious Cave

Forestin and Fleurie follow Hilda the Owl into the enchanted library. They are curious to discover the secrets of the manuscript. The library is cool and bright. The walls shine thanks to the fireflies that light the way.

Forestin, curious, asks:
« Hilda the Owl, where is the magic book? »

Fleurie, her eyes sparkling with curiosity, says:
« I want to see the animal drawings. »

Hilda the Owl, in a wise and mysterious voice, says:
« The manuscript is here. Look closely. It talks about the night animals. »

Hilda opens the manuscript. The pages are yellowed by time. Forestin and Fleurie discover beautiful illustrations. They see owls with big, wise, and piercing eyes, surrounded by soft, gray feathers. They learn that owls have special feathers. These feathers reduce noise while they fly. They help the owls hunt without being detected.

Forestin, amazed, says:
« That's amazing! Owls can see in the dark. »

Fleurie, curious, asks then:
« And the bats? How do they find their way? »

Hilda the Owl, with a soft and mysterious voice, explains:
« Bats use echolocation. They make sounds. The sounds bounce off things. They hear the echoes. They know where they are. »

After listening to the wise words of Hilda the Owl, it is decided that Forestin and Fleurie are ready to discover new adventures. They are then led out of the forest and enter a sunny meadow(6). It is there that they meet Lapinet, a mischievous rabbit(7). Forestin and Fleurie are invited to play hide and seek in the meadow, and Lapinet is seen hopping everywhere. The reason why the rabbit runs so fast is then revealed.
