📝 Quick summary of key information
What is a chameleon and why does it change color in the jungle?
The chameleon is a small, fascinating reptile that lives mainly in the jungle. It is known for its unique ability to change color. Chameleons can be between 15 cm and 60 cm long and have a long body with a sticky tail that helps them hold onto branches.
Chameleons change color for two main reasons: talking to each other and hiding. They use their colors to find a friend or to tell other chameleons to stay away. Changing color also helps them blend into their surroundings, which helps them avoid predators.
Camouflage is a very important way for chameleons to stay safe. By changing color, they can hide from birds and snakes that might eat them. Plus, this ability helps them surprise their prey, like insects, by blending into the background before catching them with their long, sticky tongue.
Chameleons play an important role in their ecosystem. By eating insects, they help control their population, which helps keep the jungle balanced. Their presence is good for the environment because they help control the number of different species.

What is a chameleon and why does it change color in the jungle?
Meeting Chameleon Carlos
After following the slippery Snake Sammy, the young monkeys Jojo and Jolie discovered how a snake moves without legs, using its scales to move silently. Sammy explained that this way of moving helps him hunt and protect himself from predators (1). Curious about this new knowledge, Jojo and Jolie decided to continue their exploration in the jungle. That's when they met Chameleon Carlos, a medium-sized chameleon with round and curious eyes.
Jojo, curious, asks:
« Hi, who are you? »
Jolie, curious, asks then:
« Yes, why do you change color? »
Chameleon Carlos, curious, says: « Oh, you must be Jojo and Jolie! I am Chameleon Carlos. Did you see how I change color? It's to hide (2) and watch without being seen. Unlike Jojo who is full of energy and courage, Jolie is curious and mischievous. She loves listening to jungle stories and thinking before acting. Me, I hide by changing color! »
Soon after, Chameleon Carlos shows his talents. He turns green to blend in with the leaves. Jojo and Jolie watch, amazed. It is explained that this ability is very useful in the jungle. Chameleon Carlos changes color to avoid dangers and to better observe other animals.
Jojo, curious, asks:
« How do you change color? »
Jolie, amazed, shouts:
« It's magical! »
Chameleon Carlos, with a mischievous smile, explains:
« No, it's natural. When I am stressed, I turn dark. When I am calm, I am light. »
After listening to Chameleon Carlos, Jojo and Jolie understand the world of chameleons better. They learn that Carlos's colors are not just for hiding, but also for communicating. Chameleon Carlos then explains how his color changes help him to camouflage (3) and communicate, adding a fun clue about the mysteries of the tropical (4) jungle.
The Mysteries of Camouflage
It is then explained that Chameleon Carlos can change color to blend into his surroundings (5). For example, he can turn green to blend into the leaves or brown to blend into the tree bark. Jojo and Jolie are amazed to see Chameleon Carlos change color so quickly and in such a fun way, as if he is playing with them.
Jojo, amazed, shouts:
« That's so funny! »
Jolie, curious, asks then:
« Can you change color as you like? »
Chameleon Carlos explains:
« Yes, I can. When I am happy, I become lighter. When I am angry, I become darker. »
Chameleon Carlos, with a mischievous smile, starts to explain: « You see, my friends, my colors can also help me hide. For example, if I want to hide from a predator, I can turn darker to blend into the shadows. But for now, stay still and watch closely. I will show you how I can blend into the plants (6) around us. »
Jojo and Jolie, though curious, watch Chameleon Carlos blend perfectly with the plants. Jolie, always curious, asks questions about his camouflage skills. After showing his abilities, Carlos changes color to become visible again, and the three friends continue their exploration, even more curious to discover the mysteries of the jungle.
After discovering Chameleon Carlos' talents, Jojo and Jolie are amazed. They wonder what other mysteries the jungle might hide. That's when they meet Coati Coco, a mammal (7) with a pointy snout and long claws. Coco uses his powerful nose to search the corners of the jungle for surprises. The children watch with curiosity as this little animal uses his senses to explore and find food.
