📝 Quick summary of key information
Why do beetles roll balls of poop?
Dung beetles are fascinating insects that have a funny way of feeding their babies. They roll balls of poop to give a yummy meal to their little ones. Imagine that, little balls of food ready to be eaten!
To make these balls, the beetles use their strong legs. They pick up pieces of poop and roll them into balls, like little bakers. Then, they push them on the ground, sometimes for long distances, to take them to a safe place.
Beetles play a very important role in nature. They help to break down organic matter, like dead leaves and animal poop. By doing this, they make the soil richer and help plants grow more easily.
Dung beetles often live in soil rich in organic matter, like forests and meadows. They dig tunnels and underground rooms where they can put their dung balls. That's where their babies can eat and grow safely.

The Unexpected Discovery
After listening carefully to Léo the Lizard's explanations, Sami and Sélia understand better why lizards love to warm up in the sun. They now know that this heat helps them move faster and be in great shape to face the challenges of the desert. With this new knowledge, the young fennecs set off again, ready to discover new wonders. Soon after, they spot a small black ball rolling in the sand. Curious, they approach to take a closer look.
Sami, curious, asks:
« What is this black ball? »
Sélia, curious, asks:
« Who is pushing this ball? »
Looking closer, they see a green beetle with golden patterns. It's Basile the Beetle. He pushes the ball with great determination. Sami asks why he is doing that.
Sami, curious, asks:
« Why are you pushing this ball? »
Basile the Beetle, with a mischievous smile, explains: « Oh, I see you have some questions! I make balls with sand and animal droppings (1). This helps keep the desert clean and enrich the soil. The balls become food for my babies, who eat the organic (2) matter inside. »
Sélia, amazed, says:
« Incredible! You do all this with your tiny legs. You must be very strong. And you made it so round and smooth. That must make it easier to push. »
Sami and Sélia are fascinated. They decide to follow Basile the Beetle to learn more. By looking closer, they notice that a small piece of paper is stuck under the ball… another clue for their treasure hunt!
Basile the Beetle's Mission
Sami and Sélia follow Basile the Beetle with curiosity, intrigued by the ball he is pushing. They want to know more about this mysterious ball. Basile the Beetle arrives at a safe spot, where he starts to dig a hole with his front legs.
Sami, curious, asks:
« Why are you digging a hole? »
Basile the Beetle, with a calm and determined voice, explains:
« I am going to bury the ball here. This helps keep the desert clean. »
Sélia, curious, asks:
« And then, what do you do with the ball? »
Basile the Beetle, with a soft but determined voice, explains: « You see, these balls are made of organic matter that is decomposing (3). They contain essential nutrients (4) for my babies. I bury them so they can find them easily. »
Sélia, curious, asks:
« Can balls be used for something else? »
Basile the Beetle, with a sly smile, then adds:
« Sometimes, balls can contain surprises. Like little hidden treasures. »
Sami, remembering the clue, says:
« I remember the clue we found. We need to get the parchment stuck under the ball. »
As Sami and Sélia were about to get the scroll, a sharp whistle in the sky caught their attention. Curious, the two young fennecs discovered that Falcon Pasha, the majestic peregrine (5) falcon, was soaring above them. They looked up and saw Falcon Pasha dive from the sky like an arrow to catch prey. The speed and agility of the falcon amazed them. Seeing the falcon, Basile the Beetle reminded Sami and Sélia that desert predators were always on the lookout (6). It was then decided to head towards the place marked on the map, ready for a new adventure. With Basile by their side, they knew they could face all the challenges the desert had in store. The next step of their quest began, and they were more determined than ever to uncover the secrets of the golden sand desert.
