Nutria live in families in their burrows. They spend their time looking for food, playing, and resting. They are very active, especially at twilight and dawn.
Nutria are very helpful in their environment. By eating water plants, they help keep their ecosystem in balance. They are like river gardeners!

Rémus the Nutria and the Secret of the Riverbanks
Why do nutrias build burrows in the riverbanks?
Rémus the Nutria's Discovery
After watching Colin the Mallard duck dive for worms and insects, Timon the toad and Lila the dragonfly wondered how ducks could stay underwater for so long. Colin had explained that his webbed feet allowed him to swim quickly and efficiently. Curious (1), Timon and Lila decided to explore the marshy banks further to discover other hidden secrets.
After spinning around (2) above the lily pads, Timon and Lila spotted an animal with light brown fur and shiny eyes. It was Rémus the Nutria. He was wearing a small straw hat and a red scarf. Rémus was carrying some branches.
Timon, curious, asks:
« Hi Rémus the Nutria, what are you doing with these branches? »
Rémus the Nutria explains:
« I am making my burrow stronger. Nutrias dig burrows in the banks. »
Curious, Lila asks:
« It's true, nutrias dig burrows in the riverbanks. But why are you doing this, Rémus the Nutria? »
Rémus the Nutria says: « To protect us from predators (3) and raise our babies. Burrows are safe and warm. »
Rémus the Nutria tells them that he saw a wavy shape (4) disappear under the water... Who could this mysterious animal be?
The Mystery Investigation
Timon and Lila, curious, asked Rémus the Nutria if he knew who that mysterious animal was.
Rémus the Nutria, with a mischievous smile, says:
« I don't know, but I can help you find out. »
Timon, excited, exclaims:
« Great, let's go see together. »
After spinning above the lily pads, Timon and Lila spotted ripples (5) on the water's surface. They decided to follow them.
Lila, curious, says:
« Look, Timon, the shadow is moving fast. »
Timon, excited, says:
« Yes, let's go take a closer look. »
Curious about the mysterious shape, Timon and Lila went on an exciting adventure. While exploring the riverbank, they met Rémus the Nutria, who was carrying branches to strengthen the entrance of his burrow. Rémus told them he had seen a wavy shape disappear under the water. Intrigued, Timon and Lila decided to follow the ripples on the water's surface. By following the ripples, they spotted an elegant (6) shape gliding with unmatched (7) grace among the reeds. The shape disappeared under the water, leaving Timon and Lila amazed and eager to discover more mysteries.
