📝 Quick summary of key information

How does a cloud decide to let rain or snow fall?

Rain happens when the tiny drops in clouds get too heavy and fall to the ground. Imagine a cloud like a big sponge full of water. When the sponge is too full, the water starts to drip.

The tiny water drops in the clouds stick together and grow bigger. They stick to each other until they are too heavy to stay in the cloud. Then, they fall down to the ground.

The temperature of the air affects the shape of the precipitation. If the air is warm, the droplets fall as liquid, that's rain. If the air is very cold, they turn into ice crystals, that's snow.

Snow forms when the air is very cold. Ice crystals form in the cloud and fall gently to the ground, like little white flakes. It's magical to see!

The Rain Show

How does a cloud decide to bring rain or snow?

The Sky Theater

After following the chain of white hills, Pluma and Nimbus, traveling clouds, are amazed by the sight of giant cumulus(1) clouds, these floating cotton balls full of mysteries. Pluma, the most curious of the two, watches the cumulus clouds form and change shape with the wind. Nimbus, more experienced, is asked by his young friend about the nature of these summer clouds. He then explains that these clouds can bring rain(2) or sunny days. Intrigued, Pluma asks how the clouds decide to bring rain or snow.

Pluma, eyes shining with curiosity, asks:
« How do clouds know when to bring the rain? »

Nimbus, with a deep and comforting voice, suggests:
« Let's go see together. We are going to discover this. »

Soon after, Pluma and Nimbus arrive in a heavenly amphitheater. They watch the clouds getting ready to play their part as water carriers.

Pluma, amazed, says:
« Look, Nimbus! The little drops are forming and getting bigger. »

Nimbus, with a deep and soothing voice, explains:
« Yes, Pluma. Tiny droplets form from small particles in the air, like dust or sea salt. »

They watch in awe as the clouds release rain, snowflakes, or icy beads to feed the Earth.

The Mystery of the Rain

Pluma and Nimbus keep watching the clouds with wonder. They see tiny water drops gathering around small bits of dust or sea salt. These bits help turn water vapor into ice crystals. The ice crystals then join together to make beautiful snowflakes.

Pluma, amazed, asks:
« Why are snowflakes so beautiful? »

Nimbus, with his deep and soothing voice, explains:
« Snowflakes form in very cold air. Each snowflake is unique. »

Pluma, curious, asks then: « And why do they sometimes turn into ice pellets(3)? »

Nimbus, the wise cloud, explains:
« Sleet happens when drops go through colder layers of air. »

Pluma, amazed, says:
« This is amazing! I want to learn more about storms. »

After watching the clouds release their precious treasures, Pluma and Nimbus are invited to find out who leads these natural shows. They fly to the Weather Kingdom, where winds, storms, and sunrays gather to decide what the weather will be on Earth. In a huge mist(4) palace, the two clouds will meet wind spirits, rain giants, and storm witches. Nimbus, wise and protective, wonders what new adventures await them in this mysterious kingdom.
