📝 Quick summary of key information
Why do Sarah and Paul have to hide sometimes in the dark?
Sarah and Paul were Jewish children who lived during a hard time called the Occupation. They had to hide to avoid being found by people who wanted to hurt them.
They hid in secret rooms, often in the dark, to stay safe. These hiding spots were places where they could feel protected, even if it was sometimes scary.
When they hid, they felt brave, scared, but also the strength of their family bond. They knew they had to be strong to survive and stay together.
These hiding places show bravery, fear, and the strength of family bonds and survival. They show how much love and teamwork can help get through tough times.

The Secret Pantry, A Hideout of Bravery
Why do Sarah and Paul sometimes have to hide in the dark?
The Discovery of the Secret Pantry
After discovering that the Oak Farm, with its ancient (1) oak trees and old sheepdog (2), was a safe haven, Sarah and Paul were warmly (3) welcomed by Mrs. Jeanne. She offered them a bowl of warm milk and homemade cookies before taking them to explore their new temporary home. The children were amazed (4) by the big kitchen, the chickens pecking in the courtyard, and the pantry filled with vegetables and preserves. But one day, Mrs. Jeanne showed them a very special place, hidden under the kitchen.
Mrs Jeanne, in an urgent voice, says:
« In the pantry, quickly. »
Sarah, curious, asks:
« Why, Mrs. Jeanne? »
Mrs Jeanne, in a soft but firm voice, then explains to them:
« Soldiers sometimes come. You must hide. »
Paul, worried, asks then:
« Where are we going? »
Mrs Jeanne, with a soft and reassuring voice, says:
« Under the kitchen, in the pantry. »
Sarah and Paul go down to the kitchen, into the dim light. Paul is shaking. Sarah holds his hand. In the shadows, they learn to be quiet, to listen... and to be strong together.
The Learning of Fear and Bravery
In the shadows, they learn to be quiet, to listen... and to be strong together. Suddenly, heavy footsteps echo. The German voices are recognizable. Paul starts to shake. Sarah, feeling her brother's fear, squeezes his hand tighter. She whispers comforting words to calm him down.
Sarah, feeling her brother's fear, whispers:
« Shh, Paul. Stay calm. We're together. »
Paul, his voice shaking, says:
« Yes, Sarah. I am scared. »
Sarah, after taking a deep breath, says:
« Me too. But we are strong. »
The soldiers are looking everywhere. They open doors. They talk loudly. Sarah and Paul stay still (5). They listen to the noises. They feel scared. But they stay strong. They know they must hide. They know they must be brave.
Sarah, in a soft but firm voice, says:
« We must stay quiet. Mrs. Jeanne is protecting us. She told us to stay here and not make any noise. We must be strong and brave. »
Paul, after listening to the soldiers' footsteps, says:
« Yes, Sarah. Mrs. Jeanne is really kind. She protects us and teaches us to be strong. We must stay quiet and listen, just like she told us. »
Once the fear faded away (6), Sarah and Paul go back up to the surface, their hearts pounding. They discover that, even when hiding, they can learn the truth thanks to allies like Joseph the Postman. Every morning, Joseph arrives on his red bike, carrying letters, newspapers, and sometimes a wink for Mrs. Jeanne. Joseph speaks softly to the children and sometimes hides secret messages from the Resistance (7). The children learn what is happening in the country while staying safe. They now know that their hiding place is not just a refuge, but also a symbol of their resistance and hope. They are ready to face new adventures, knowing they can count on their courage and the help of their friends.
