📝 Quick summary of key information

How do children learn what is happening outside during the war?

During the war, children couldn't go out much. They had little information about what was happening outside. Mail carriers, like Joseph, played a very important role. They brought letters and sometimes secret messages.

Every word from the outside world was special to the children. They got little news, but every letter or message brought hope. Mail carriers could bring news from family or friends.

The children found hope in the messages they received. The messages could talk about the end of the war or a victory. Every letter was a little light in tough times.

How do children learn what is happening outside during the war?

Joseph the Postman's Mysterious Deliveries

After spending a restless(1) night in the dark pantry(2), behind the potato sacks, next to Blanche, a soft-coated German Shepherd, Sarah and Paul wake up early. They have learned to stay quiet and still, even when the black cat, Whiskers, walks between their legs, so as not to attract the attention of the German soldiers who sometimes patrolled(3) near the farm. That morning, they hear the familiar sound of Joseph the Postman(4)'s red bike approaching. Mrs. Jeanne, the farmer who is hiding them, is getting ready to welcome Joseph, knowing that he always brings news from the outside world.

Mrs Jeanne explains to the children:
« Joseph the Postman arrives every morning on his red bike. He gives out letters, newspapers... »

Sarah, curious, asks:
« Mrs Jeanne, what does Joseph the Postman do? »

Mrs Jeanne explains to Sarah:
« Joseph the Postman brings letters. Sometimes, he brings secret messages. »

Paul, curious, asks:
« Secret messages? »

Mrs Jeanne, with a serious look, explains:
« Yes, he sometimes brings secret messages to help people. You must stay quiet and never talk about them to anyone. »

One day, he gives Sarah an empty envelope. Inside: a drawing of a little boat. 'This means something is moving...', he whispers.

The Secrets of the Envelopes

Sarah shows the drawing to Paul. Paul looks at the drawing and asks Sarah what it means.

Sarah, after thinking for a moment, says:
« I don't know. Maybe Mrs. Jeanne knows. »

Paul, after looking at the drawing for a long time, asks:
« Mrs Jeanne, what does this drawing mean? »

Mrs Jeanne, after looking at the drawing, explains to Sarah and Paul:
« This means that boats are coming. Maybe friends. »

In the days that followed, Sarah and Paul kept learning secrets hidden in the letters from Joseph the Postman. One morning, Mrs. Jeanne, a kind and protective farmer, decided to take them to the village market. Sarah, curious, looked at the almost empty stalls and the villagers who were whispering. Mrs. Jeanne then explained that during the war, you need ration tickets(5) to buy food. She showed the children a small book of tickets, and even a black rabbit, which the butcher sold to them in exchange for these precious pieces of paper. The children understood that life in the countryside is full of challenges, but also moments of joy and solidarity(6). They now know they must stay strong and brave, as every day brings new adventures and mysteries to discover. They get ready to live a new day, prepared to face challenges with hope and determination(7), waiting for the next news from Joseph the Postman.
