The Path of the Resistors
Who were the Resistors and why did they hide in the woods?
The Discovery of the Secret Path
After finding the ration tickets, Sarah and Paul walk with Mrs Jeanne in the woods around Oak Farm. Mrs Jeanne explains to the children that during the war, food is scarce. People have to use ration tickets to buy bread, butter, and other essential items. The children notice the worried looks of the villagers and the secret (1) whispers of the adults, but they also feel the unity (2) that binds them. They understand that the adults are afraid, but also that they support each other.
Sarah, curious about the marks on the trees, asks:
« Mrs Jeanne, why do the trees have marks? »
Mrs Jeanne, with a soft but firm voice, explains:
« These are signs left by the Resistants. They use these marks to find their way. »
Paul, curious, asks:
« The Resisters? Who are they? »
Mrs Jeanne, in a calm but determined voice, explains: « These are men and women who fight in secret against the German occupation (3). They defend freedom. »
Sarah, with her sharp eyes, spots a colorful butterfly resting on a leaf. Mrs Jeanne tells them that the butterfly's colors are beautiful and it's important to respect nature. She explains that the Resisters use these hidden paths to carry messages, weapons, or help people in danger. The children feel that they are walking on a path of courage and hope.
While walking with Mrs Jeanne, Sarah and Paul discover a path lined with discreet marks carved into the trees. They realize that this path is used by the Resistance to carry secret messages. Joseph the Postman, the cheerful and dedicated (4) postman, quietly approaches and places a message rolled up inside a hollow acorn. The children feel that they are walking on a path of courage and hope.
The Secret Message
Sarah and Paul look at Joseph the Postman with wide eyes. They understand that this little acorn holds an important secret.
Sarah, curious, asks:
« Joseph the Postman, how do you find these secret paths? »
Joseph the Postman, with a secret smile, starts to explain:
« We know the forest very well. We watch the animals and the plants. We use secret signs on the trees to guide us. You see, secret paths are often marked by signs that only those who know how to recognize them can see. »
Paul, curious, asks:
« Do the animals help too? »
Joseph the Postman, with a mysterious smile, explains:
« Yes, animals sometimes show safe paths. They know where to hide. »
Sarah and Paul listen carefully. They understand that nature is a precious ally (5) for the Resistants. They feel closer to these anonymous (6) heroes.
Following the path, Sarah and Paul feel a new energy. They wonder what role they can play. A fox passes in front of them and disappears into the bushes. Mrs. Jeanne, seeing them so intrigued, decides to teach them the essential values, even in the heart of the war. Around a simple meal, Mrs. Jeanne talks about her childhood, the kindness of people, and what she hopes for the future. She tells them stories of courage and solidarity, showing them that even in the hardest moments, there is always hope. Sarah and Paul listen carefully, feeling strength and determination growing in them. They now know that they are part of a great chain of courage and hope. They promise to stay discreet and always protect the secrets of the Resistance. Night falls gently on Oak Farm, but the children know that their adventure is just beginning. They go to bed, their hearts light, dreaming of the next discoveries and the roles they can play in this fight for freedom.
