When they were not at school, the children spent their free time playing outside. They often lined up to buy candies or bread. The lines were long, but the children always found a way to have fun while waiting.
Children in the USSR loved to sing songs and take part in parades. There were lots of colorful posters showing workers and rockets. The children loved these pictures and felt proud of their country.

Elena's Stories
What was it like to be a child like Nika in the USSR?
Mama Elena's Memories
After finding out that their living room hides two worlds: an American one with jazz records (1) and a Soviet (2) one with patriotic (3) songs, Alex and Nika are more curious (4) than ever. Curious, they ask their parents and find out that their lives are marked by two different cultures, just like their two dogs, a golden retriever and a husky. They realize that their home is a unique mix of stories and traditions. One day, while making pirozkis, Mama Elena tells Nika about her first day of school, with a red uniform and patriotic songs.
Mama Elena, as she kneads the dough for the pirozhkis, starts to tell:
« At school, we wore red uniforms. »
Nika, eyes sparkling with curiosity, asks:
« Was the red uniform pretty? »
Mama Elena, while kneading the dough for the pirozhki, tells Nika:
« Yes, it was very pretty. We sang patriotic songs. »
Alex, curious, asks:
« What are patriotic songs? »
Mama Elena, while still making the pirozhki, says:
« They were songs about our country, Russia. »
She shows them a child's notebook with drawings from that time. On the last page, a little red star hides a message from her teacher, a sweet memory from another world.
Songs and Parades
Alex and Nika look carefully at the notebook. They find colorful drawings of rockets and stars. A little red star hides a secret message.
Alex, curious about the little drawing, asks:
« What's written under the star? »
Mama Elena, with a soft smile, reads aloud:
« It's a message from my teacher. She wrote: 'Always be proud of your country. »
Nika, curious, asks:
« Was your teacher nice? »
Mama Elena, with a warm smile, says:
« Yes, she was very kind. She taught us to be good and to help others. »
Alex and Nika listen carefully. They imagine school days in the USSR (5). They think about blue uniforms and patriotic songs.
After enjoying (6) the delicious piroshki and listening to Mama Elena's memories, Nika turns to her mom. She remembers the stories Mama Elena often tells her about life in the USSR, the long lines, the schools, and the popular songs. Opening an old wooden chest, Mama Elena takes out an old school notebook with drawings from that time. On the last page, a small red star hides a message from her teacher, a sweet memory from another world. A gray squirrel (7), who often sneaks in through the window, curiously watches the old things, as if it understands the importance of these memories. Nika wonders what the next adventure holds, eager to discover even more secrets hidden in her house with two worlds.
