📝 Quick summary of key information
The Cold War was a time when two big groups of countries, the United States and the Soviet Union, did not get along. They were afraid that spies would steal their military or science secrets. This fear made people very suspicious and inspired many spy movies and games.
The spies were trying to steal very important secrets, like missile plans or scientific inventions. They used secret codes to talk to each other. Sometimes, they even worked in secret for the other side, which is called being a double agent.
This fear changed people's daily lives. People were very careful with what they said and did. They were afraid that someone might listen to their talks or read their letters. Governments also watched foreigners and suspicious people very closely.
Fear of spies has also inspired lots of fun things. Movies like James Bond and spy games have become very popular. These spy stories have captured the imagination of kids and grown-ups, making the Cold War even more mysterious and exciting.

The Spy Games
Why was everyone afraid of spies during the Cold War?
The Secret Mission
Back home, twins Alex and Nika talk about the space race. Alex explains that the Soviets (1) sent the first dog, Laika, into space. Nika adds that the Americans sent chimpanzees (2) like Ham. They still wonder who really won the race. While Mum Elena prepares dinner, Daddy John tells them stories from his childhood in the United States. The children listen carefully, their eyes shining with curiosity.
Alex, curious, asks:
« Who won the space race? »
Daddy John, with a cheeky smile, starts to tell a story:
« The two countries did amazing things. The Soviets sent the first man into space in 1961. »
Nika, eyes sparkling, adds:
« And the Americans walked on the Moon. »
Daddy John, with a cheeky smile, starts to explain: « Exactly. The two countries were scared of spies (3). They were worried that secrets might be stolen. »
Not long after, Alex and Nika organize a secret mission (4) in the garden. Inspired by their parents' spy stories, the kids use Morse code messages and sunglasses to disguise themselves. They hide behind the bushes, watching every suspicious move.
In their spy box, they find a strange piece with Russian initials. Daddy John smiles: 'Maybe a real spy souvenir... or maybe not!
The Secrets of the Cold War
After finding the mysterious (5) coin, Alex and Nika show their discovery to Mum Elena. She looks closely at the Russian letters.
After looking at the item, Mum Elena says:
« It looks like a souvenir from my country. »
Alex, curious, wonders:
« Now that we have found this piece, I wonder why were spies so important during the Cold War? »
Daddy John, with a mischievous smile, then says:
« The two countries had secrets. They were afraid that spies would steal them. »
Nika, curious, asks:
« Could spies steal rocket plans? »
Daddy John, with a sneaky smile, explains:
« Yes, even rocket plans. They had to keep the secrets. »
After exploring their garden and discovering hidden mysteries, Alex and Nika are intrigued (6). They wonder how adults managed to avoid a world war. By listening to conversations between their parents and neighbors, Alex and Nika hear about secret meetings (7) and peace treaties. Did the adults really manage to avoid a real war? Alex and Nika look at each other, determined to find out more. Maybe next time, we can find clues about spies in Grandpa's library! suggests Alex. Nika nods with a mischievous smile, ready for the next adventure.
