📝 Quick summary of key information

The Berlin Wall was a big wall that split the city of Berlin into two parts: East and West. It was so long that it went all the way across the city, like an invisible line that kept people from seeing each other.

The Wall was built to stop people from going from one side to the other, because the two parts of Berlin had different governments. It was like two families living in the same house but not being able to talk to each other.

The Berlin Wall fell in 1989. People started to knock it down with hammers and picks, and some even drove cars through the holes. It was a moment of great joy and freedom.

The fall of the Wall was special because it marked the end of the division between East and West. It brought a lot of hope and symbolized freedom and the reunion of separated families.

The Fall of the Cardboard Berlin Wall

Why was the fall of the Wall such a special moment?

The Cardboard Wall

Alex and Nika love listening to stories from their parents. Their mum, Elena, often tells them stories about life in the USSR(1), the long lines, the schools, and the popular songs. She also talks about the white dove, a symbol of peace, that she used to see often. Alex and Nika understand that even the biggest conflicts can be solved by talking and working together. One day, while playing in the garden, they decide to build a wall out of cardboard to better understand what their parents have told them.

Alex, after listening to Mum Elena's stories, suggests:
« Nika, let's build a wall like the one in the German capital. »

Nika, excited, says:
« Yes, Alex. With cardboard bricks. »

Not long after, Alex and Nika play at being reporters(2) on a big historical day. Alex imagines the cameras and microphones, while Nika runs around to interview imaginary passersby. Grandpa, seeing them, smiles and tells them how people celebrated the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Daddy John, with a big smile, says:
« You know, people were dancing and singing in the streets. It was an amazing party! Everyone was so happy to see that wall come down, the one that had kept them apart for so long. »

Mum Elena, with a gentle smile, says:
« Families who were apart finally came back together. »

While playing reporters, Alex and Nika have fun knocking down the colorful blocks of their cardboard wall. That's when they find a message written by Grandpa: Together, we can always rebuild a better world.

Pappy's Message

Alex and Nika read the message. They are amazed. They understand that the fall of the Berlin Wall brought a lot of hope. Freedom found, unity, and the end of Europe's division.

Alex, after reading Grandpa's message, says to Nika:
« Nika, let's rebuild our cardboard wall. »

Nika, with a cheeky smile, suggests:
« Yes, Alex. But this time, let's add pictures of doves and flowers. »

Alex, with a smile, adds:
« To show peace and friendship. »

Nika, excited, suggests: « Exactly. Let's play reporters and diplomats(3). »

Alex, eyes sparkling, suggests: « Let's imagine scenes of reconciliation(4) and celebration. »

With light hearts and minds full of new knowledge, Alex and Nika put away their colorful bricks. They now know that even the tallest walls can be knocked down by friendship and understanding. As they look at the garden, a little red squirrel dashes between the branches, reminding them that nature and friendship are powerful forces. Who knows what other adventures await them? Maybe they will discover the mysteries of great explorations(5) or the secrets of faraway cultures(6). One thing is for sure, their endless curiosity will always lead them to new discoveries.
