📝 Quick summary of key information

World War I was a big fight between many countries in Europe. It started in 1914 and lasted for four long years. It was like a huge argument between friends that went wrong.

This war started because there were tensions between countries. It was like each country wanted to show it was the strongest. The friendships between countries made things more complicated, and soon, almost all of Europe was involved.

Kids like Louis and Karl had a hard time. When the war started, men had to go and fight. Kids had to help at home and sometimes even work to support the war effort.

Families had to adapt to this new life. They learned to save resources, like food and coal. Children often played important roles, helping their mothers and grandmothers with daily tasks.

The Start of the Adventure

How did it all begin for Louis and Karl?

The Attic Discovery

After finding the wooden box filled with Grandpa Henri's memories, curious French boy Louis dove into the mysteries of World War I. In the dusty(1) attic of their old country house, he found a yellowed letter, a goose feather, and a map of Verdun. His heart pounding, Louis realized that these items belonged to his grandfather. He remembered that Grandpa Henri often talked about his childhood friend, Opa Friedrich, an old German, and their secret correspondence(2) during World War I. A striped cat, Whiskers, watched the scene while purring softly. Louis then decided to write to Karl, his curious and calm German cousin, who lives in Berlin with his family, to learn more about this friendship that had crossed borders and wars.

Louis, after looking at the things in the box, says:
« Grandpa Henri, I want to write to Karl. »

Grandpa Henri, sitting in his old armchair, asks Louis:
« Do you want to write to Karl? »

Louis, eyes sparkling with excitement, turns to Grandpa Henri and says:
« Yes, I want to know how he lived through the war. »

Grandpa Henri, with a cheeky smile, said:
« That's a good idea. I know some secret paths. »

Louis imagined soldiers marching through villages, posters calling for soldiers(3) stuck on the walls, and trains full of soldiers going to the front. He wondered how Karl, his German cousin, was experiencing the war. Louis decided to write his first letter with a goose feather quill and a tin(4) inkwell(5), hiding his words between old maps and an antique feather. He gave his letter to Grandpa Henri, who carefully put it in his memory box. Louis knew that this letter was the start of a big adventure.

His letter, placed between old maps and an old-fashioned pen, became the start of a secret exchange that would change everything. Louis eagerly waited for Karl's reply, hoping that their friendship could cross borders and wars. He knew that this adventure was just beginning.

The First Exchange

Karl carefully opened the letter. He read Louis's words, imagining his cousin in France. He felt the importance of this letter. Karl decided to reply. He took a piece of paper and a quill. He wrote carefully, imagining Louis reading his words.

Karl, after reading the letter, starts to talk:
« Louis, I live in a small village. There are posters everywhere. I see soldiers walking by. »

Karl, thinking, says: « Opa Friedrich tells me about the war. He was a teacher(6). He helps me understand. »

Karl, looking out the window, says:
« We are playing in Little Street. The children are running and laughing. The war is far away. »

Karl finished his letter. He folded it carefully and put it in an envelope. He went to see Opa Friedrich. He asked his grandfather to pass it in secret. Opa Friedrich smiled and agreed. He knew how important these letters were.

Opa Friedrich, with a soft voice, reassures Karl:
« Karl, your letter will leave soon. Louis will read it with joy. You are friends despite the war. »

With a goose feather and a tin inkwell, Louis wrote his first letter. He hid it in a wooden box with a gray mouse as his accomplice, before placing it between old maps and an antique quill. From now on, Louis and Karl's words would travel across the front lines, weaving a secret and precious bond of friendship. Louis and Karl discovered that even in war, there could be bridges of friendship. They continued to write to each other, sharing their lives, fears, and hopes. Each letter was an adventure, a discovery, and a precious connection between two cousins separated by war but united by friendship. Next time, they would explore together the mysteries of the Silent Station(7), where soldiers passed through and where old tales mixed with war memories.
