📝 Quick summary of key information
During the war, it was very hard for children to write to each other. Censorship, which means not allowing certain messages to pass, stopped letters from going between enemy countries. Grown-ups were afraid the letters might contain secrets.
Two children, a Terrier and a Dachshund, lived in enemy countries. Thanks to their grandfathers, they found a way to write to each other in secret. They used old postal paths, secret roads that their grandfathers knew well.
These paths were important because they let the two children stay in touch during the war. They could share news and feel less lonely. Their friendship could continue thanks to these old mail paths.

The First Secret Letters
How did two children manage to write to each other during the war?
The First Exchanges
After finding an old box full of memories in the attic (1) of his house, Louis is curious about a photo of Papy Henri with an older man and a big German shepherd dog. Curious, Louis decides to write to his cousin Karl, hoping to rekindle (2) the friendship between their grandfathers. He goes to the Memory Attic, where he starts writing his first letter, full of hope and curiosity. With the help of Papy Henri, Louis writes his first letter to his cousin Karl. He hopes to rekindle the friendship between their grandfathers. The Memory Attic becomes the place where the first seeds (3) of friendship are planted, even though war is raging outside.
Louis, curious, asks Papy Henri:
« Papy Henri, do you know this old man with the white mustache in the photo? »
After looking at the photo, Papy Henri tells Louis:
« Yes, that is Grandpa Friedrich. We were friends before the war. »
Louis, after thinking for a moment, asks:
« Why don't you talk to each other anymore? »
Papy Henri, after looking at the photo, explains to Louis:
« The war changed everything. But we can write to Karl. »
Louis, after thinking for a moment, said:
« I want to write to Karl. How do I do it? »
Papy Henri, with a sly smile, explains:
« I know secret paths for letters. Grandpa Friedrich will help Karl. »
Every message becomes a seed of friendship planted in a world of conflict (4). One day, Louis receives a drawing in his letter: a dove between two helmets. Louis is amazed by this symbol (5) of peace in the middle of the war.
The Secret Post Roads
Louis shows the drawing to Papy Henri. He wants to know more about the war.
Louis, his eyes full of curiosity, asks:
« Why is there a war? »
Papy Henri, after looking at the drawing, explains to Louis:
« Countries fight over land. It's sad. »
Louis, after showing the drawing to Papy Henri, says:
« Karl and I can talk about peace. »
Papy Henri, with a kind smile, encourages the children:
« Yes, write to each other often. Talk about your games and your dreams. »
Louis, after thinking for a moment, said:
« I want to tell Karl that I am thinking of him. »
Time passes, and the letters between Louis and Karl become richer and richer in details. Louis learns about the trenches, those long ditches where soldiers live in difficult conditions. One day, Karl tells a story in his letter that Grandpa Friedrich read to him: the story of a German soldier sharing chocolate with a French soldier during a truce (6). Louis then imagines a little dog, a German shepherd, crossing the front lines (7), bringing some comfort and hope to the soldiers on both sides. Louis and Karl keep writing, hoping that their letters will one day bring peace and friendship between their countries. Their next adventure might lead them to discover other secrets and have new adventures together.
