📝 Quick summary of key information
How did the Romans do their shopping?
Roman markets were busy and noisy places. You could find many different things like olives, cloth, and big jars. These markets were the heart of daily life for the Romans.
Things sold at the markets came from all over the Roman Empire. Romans loved to buy fresh food and things made in different places. Amphoras, for example, often carried delicious wines.
To pay for their purchases, the Romans used bartering and coins. Bartering meant exchanging goods for other goods. For example, you could exchange vegetables for cloth.
The merchants attracted customers by telling stories about their products. They often said things like: Come and taste my olives, they come straight from the gardens of Venus! The children loved listening to these stories.

How did the Romans do their shopping?
The Busy Market
After walking on the stones of the Forum and admiring the giant columns and shiny statues, Maximus and Livia are captivated (1) by the stories carved in the stone. The two children feel like modern explorers, searching for a stray dog, a small black and white poodle, who leads them to a noisy corner of the Forum. The calls of the merchants and the tempting smells catch their attention. Maximus, with his red tunic, golden cape, and wooden helmet decorated with a blue feather, and Livia, wearing a white dress and a golden belt, walk curious and amazed. They discover a world where trades and stories mix.
Maximus, eyes shining, says:
« Look, Livia, scrolls and treasures. »
Livia, the little Roman girl with her white dress and golden belt, exclaims:
« Maximus, the little Roman boy with his red tunic, golden cape, and wooden helmet decorated with a blue feather, come see the scrolls and maps. »
Maximus, curious, asks:
« What are these shapes and colors? »
Livia, after looking at the objects, explains to Maximus: « These are amphoras (2), Maximus. They are used to carry liquids. »
Not long after, Maximus and Livia watch the bright colors of the fabrics. The exciting (3) smells of spices surround them. The merchants tell amazing stories to attract customers. The children are fascinated by the colorful clothes and the big gestures of the merchants.
An old merchant offers them a strange coin in exchange for a riddle (4) (5) solved, opening a new path to the past.
The Merchant's Riddle
After solving the riddle, Maximus and Livia are led by old Merchant Gaius to a hidden (6) part of the Forum. They are asked to go down narrow steps leading to a dark basement (7). A mysterious glow lights their way, guiding them to an old wooden door carved with strange symbols (8).
Maximus, with wide eyes, whispers:
« Livia, look at this door. It is magical. »
Livia, after looking at the symbols, says:
« Maximus, touch the door. It opens. »
Maximus, amazed, says:
« It's a secret room. There are scrolls everywhere. »
After looking at the scrolls, Livia tells Maximus:
« Maximus, come see these maps. They show the trade routes. »
After exploring the secret room and studying the maps of the trade routes, Maximus and Livia leave the building. They find themselves in a noisy corner of the Forum, where merchants boast about their treasures from far-off lands. An old merchant offers them a strange coin in exchange for solving a riddle, opening a new path to the past. Intrigued, they accept the challenge. After solving the riddle, they head towards the Colosseum, drawn by the legends of the gladiators. Upon entering, the hidden secrets of the arena are revealed to them, where majestic lions and powerful horses were once used in hunting scenes alongside the heroes of the Empire. The epic battles and stories of bravery that marked this famous place are imagined by the two children. Their adventure at the market has prepared them for new discoveries, and they are eager to see what the Colosseum has in store for them. Perhaps they will find another treasure or a new riddle to solve. One thing is for sure, Maximus and Livia are ready for new adventures in the Mysteries of Ancient Rome.
