📝 Quick summary of key information

Can we learn to be free?

Freedom is being able to make choices by yourself. It's like having wings to fly wherever you want, without being tied by strings. Imagine a bird that can choose where it wants to go. That's freedom!

Education is very important to be free. Learning to read and write helps you think and express yourself. It's like having a magic key that opens lots of doors to new worlds and bright ideas.

Thinking for yourself is an act of freedom. It's like being the captain of your own boat, choosing the direction to go. This helps you make good choices and not just follow others without thinking.

A wise citizen is someone who knows how to think and speak. During the Revolution, education became very important. It helped people become freer by giving them access to learning, like a light that shows the way to freedom.

The Idea Factory

Can you learn to be free?

The Discovery of the Good Ideas Factory

While listening to the adults talking under the trees, Lucien and Manon learn that education is the key to freedom(1). A little sparrow, perched on a branch, seems to encourage them to follow this path. They then decide to explore this promising new future. After watching the gatherings at the Place of Ideas, the two children head towards an old mill, transformed into a school by the revolutionaries(2). They are intrigued by the joyful shouts and lively discussions coming from inside.

Not long after, Lucien and Manon push open the heavy wooden door. Inside, they find a big room filled with children. Some are writing on pieces of paper. Others are drawing colorful pictures. They are drawing symbols of the Republic. Other children are talking in small groups. They are sharing ideas and dreams for a better future.

Lucien, excited, says:
« Look, Manon, a printing press! »

Manon, curious, points to a corner of the room and says:
« And over there, children are drawing plans for schools and hospitals. »

A man with messy gray hair and round glasses walks towards them. It's Mr. Gaspard, the schoolteacher(3). He gives them an empty notebook.

Mr. Gaspard, schoolteacher, gives the empty notebook to Lucien and Manon and says:
« It's up to you to fill it with your ideas for tomorrow. »

Lucien and Manon, excited, start to write and draw. They imagine a world where everyone can learn and express themselves freely. They dream of a better future.

Learning About Freedom

After drawing and writing, Lucien and Manon look at each other. They know they have a lot to learn. They want to share their ideas with the other kids.

Lucien, after thinking for a moment, said:
« Manon, we must talk to the other children. »

Manon, determined, nods:
« Yes, Lucien. We must show them our drawings and our writings. »

Lucien, after a moment of thought, suggests:
« We can tell them what we have learned. »

Manon, with a determined smile, is about to say:
« And tell them that everyone can learn and express themselves freely. »

Inspired by the children at school, Lucien and Manon decide to find out what lies behind the walls of power. They approach a big park, where a graceful(4) swan is seen gliding on a pond. The children watch the guards in front of the golden gates, while Lucien is heard listening to the whispers of a tired servant. They promise to return to school every day to learn and share their ideas. Their adventure has changed them, and they know that freedom starts with education. They are guided to the Square of Ideas, ready to share their new knowledge with the other children and to continue their quest for freedom and equality(5). Next time, they might discover the secrets hidden behind the walls of the King's Palace, where important decisions(6) are made.
