📝 Quick summary of key information
How do you build a strong wall with bricks?
A brick wall is a strong structure made of small, rectangular stones called bricks. Brick walls are important because they protect houses and buildings from bad weather and unwanted visitors.
To build a brick wall, you need bricks, mortar, a trowel, and a spirit level. Mortar is a sticky paste that helps to stick the bricks together. The builder uses a trowel to spread the mortar and a spirit level to make sure the wall is straight.
The bricklayer places the bricks one by one following a precise plan. He starts with the first row, called the foundation, and builds up slowly. It is important to follow a precise plan so that the wall is straight and strong. Each brick must be well aligned with the others.
To build a strong wall, you need patience, carefulness, and a good team spirit. The builder must be patient to place each brick carefully. They must also be careful so the wall is straight and strong. Working as a team helps to build faster and better.

Builders at Work
After seeing the powerful yellow bulldozer driven by the operator, Léon and Lila head to the new neighborhood. They understood how important this bulldozer is for digging the foundations (1) of the future homes, just like the construction site (2) cat that always watches everything. The two children, with their eyes shining with curiosity, now wonder how the walls of the houses take shape. Mister Pole, the foreman, spots them and waves his hand. He invites them to follow him to the corner where the masons are working. Léon and Lila, excited, run towards him, ready to discover the secrets of building walls. Hugo the Mason, the passionate builder, greets them with a warm smile. With his yellow safety helmet and blue overalls, he seems ready to share his knowledge about building walls.
Mister Pole, with a proud smile, explains:
« Look closely. Hugo the Mason is placing the first bricks of the future school. »
Léon, curious, points to the brick and asks:
« What is this drawing on the brick? »
Lila, curious, says:
« It's a house symbol with a heart. »
Mister Pole, with his reassuring voice and his construction goggles, explains: « It is a sign of quality and durability (3). Each brick is made with care. We use clay (4) and water. Then, we bake them at high temperature to become strong. »
Léon, curious, then asks:
« How are the bricks stacked to make a straight wall? »
Mister Pole, with his big love for his job, explains:
« With tools like the spirit level and the plumb line. They help to check that each brick is straight. »
While helping to pass the bricks, Lila finds a small drawing carved into one of the blocks… A house symbol with a heart in the middle. Léon, with his wide eyes, and Lila are amazed by Hugo the Mason's strength and precision. They understand that each brick, each layer of mortar, helps make the wall strong. They can't wait to find out what this symbol hides.
The Mysterious Symbol
Léon and Lila watch Hugo the Mason, a tall and strong man, place each brick carefully. His powerful arms handle the blocks with amazing precision. They observe how he uses the mortar to stick the bricks together. Hugo, with his yellow safety helmet and blue overalls, shows them how he uses a trowel (5) to spread the mortar. His eyes shine with determination, and his smile is warm and encouraging. A small scar on his chin reminds them of a past construction adventure.
Léon, curious about Hugo the Mason's precise movements, asks:
« What is this stuff? »
Curious about the mortar, Léon and Lila turn to Mister Pole who explains to them:
« Mortar is a mix of sand, cement, and water. It sticks the bricks together. Without mortar, the wall wouldn't stand. »
Lila, curious, asks: « Why are the bricks placed in an alternating (6) pattern? »
Mister Pole, with a great passion for his job, explains:
« It's to make the wall stronger. The bricks in an alternating pattern create a more resistant structure. This prevents the wall from moving. »
Léon and Lila keep asking questions. They want to know everything about the building. Hugo the Mason explains that every step is important. He shows them how the masons use tools to measure and line up the bricks. The children are fascinated by the precision and patience needed.
While the masons put down the first bricks, a curious little bird, a sparrow, watches the children. They still have so much to discover on the construction site. After placing a few bricks, Léon and Lila are intrigued by the sound of a drill (7). They go to the trench where a plumber is installing blue and red pipes. He tells them that these pipes are magical: they bring water to the houses. Léon and Lila, with sparkling eyes, now wonder how the water gets to the faucets. Hugo the Mason, a tall and muscular man with strong arms, wearing a yellow safety helmet and a blue overalls, with a warm and encouraging smile, tells them they will find out next time. The children, eager, promise to come back soon to learn more. They leave the construction site with their heads full of new knowledge and dreams of building.
