📝 Quick summary of key information

Why is a good roof important for a house?

Roofers are magic workers who put tiles or slates on roofs. They often work high up, like building acrobats.

These workers are very important because they protect the house from rain, wind, and cold. Without them, our houses would be like sandcastles by the sea.

A good roof has an important job: it keeps a building safe and strong for a long time. It must be strong to withstand the weather and the seasons.

If the roof is not put on right, the house can be damaged by bad weather. Water leaks can ruin the walls and the ceiling, making the house unlivable.

The Roofers' Roof

Why is a good roof important for a house?

The Rooftop Climb

After building a small window model in the Carpenter's Workshop, Lila and Léon, along with Mister Pole, the village foreman, leave behind the smells of freshly cut wood and glue. They set off to discover another essential job in the Village of Builders: that of the roofers. They walk towards a big construction site(1). Men are placing red tiles on a roof. Léon and Lila look up. They watch with fascination. Mister Pole, a strong man in an orange vest with a white beard and safety glasses, explains everything with simple words and a great passion for his job.

Léon, full of excitement, points and says:
« Look, Lila! The coverers are putting on tiles. »

Lila, looking at the coverers with admiration, says:
« Yes, Léon. They work very high up. They are strong. »

Léon, curious, asks then:
« Why are they putting tiles? »

Lila, after watching the coverers, explains:
« To protect the house. From the rain, the wind, and the cold. »

Soon after, Léon and Lila understand the importance of every small action. They watch the teamwork(2) and precision(3) of the roofers. They talk about the different materials used. The roofers explain the names of the tools and the actions.

One of the coverers gives them a tile with a little sun carved on it. A symbol of protection from above!

The Magic of a Tile

Léon and Lila look at the tile with the little sun. They are amazed. They touch the tile. It is smooth.

Léon, amazed, whispers:
« It's pretty, this drawing. »

Lila, after looking at the tile carefully, explains to Léon:
« Yes, Léon. The sun carved on this tile is a symbol of protection. It is supposed to bring warmth and light to the house, just like the sun in the sky. »

Léon, curious, asks:
« Why is there a sun on the tile, roofer? »

Mister Pole, with his love for his job, explains:
« The sun gives warmth. It chases away the cold. »

Lila, curious, asks:
« And do the tiles protect from the rain? »

Mister Pole, with a smile, explains:
« Yes, Lila. The tiles stop the water from coming in. They keep the house dry. »

With their tile in hand, Léon and Lila walk to another corner of the construction site. They spot a majestic(4) crane(5), a real metal spider, that seems to dance in the sky. Léon, eyes sparkling, exclaims: Look, Lila! A crane! Curious, they approach to discover how this essential tool helps build the tallest buildings in the village. Mister Pole, the village construction site boss, seeing them intrigued(6), explains with simple words and great passion for his job, the crucial role of the crane in construction. Léon and Lila watch with fascination the precise movements of the crane. Then, they discover particular geometric(7) shapes drawn on the tiles. These remind Lila of the patterns she loves to draw on her house plans. The children have fun drawing a relief pattern with their fingers, imagining the stories these shapes could tell.
