📝 Quick summary of key information

How does a machine learn to recognize a cat?

Machine learning is like learning to recognize friends. We show lots of examples to a machine so it knows what a cat is. The more pictures it sees, the better it learns.

Machines use special rules to look at pictures. They look for things that are the same in new pictures and ones they have seen before. It's like playing Guess Who? but with photos.

It is important to show many different examples. If we only show black cats, the machine might think that all cats are black. So, we show it cats of all colors and sizes.

When a machine sees lots of pictures of cats, it gets very good at recognizing them. It compares new pictures with the ones it has already seen and says if it's a cat or not. It's like it has a big memory full of cat photos.

The Learning Dome

How does a machine learn to recognize a cat?

The Discovery of the Machine Learning Dome

In a room full of screens, Noa and Mila found IAlexandra, an AI with colorful spiral eyes. With jokes and fun explanations, IAlexandra showed them how machines can learn. They even laughed out loud when they learned that the AI could recognize a dog among hundreds of breeds, like a cute Labrador! After spending time exploring the AI's abilities, Noa and Mila wonder how IAlexandra can learn to recognize other things, like a cat.

Noa, curious, asks: « How does a machine(1) learn to recognize a cat? »

IAlexandra, with a pixelated smile, says:
« I am going to show you. Follow me. »

Not long after, IAlexandra takes them to a magical place: the Dome(2) of Machine Learning(3). Machine learning means showing many examples to a machine so it can learn to recognize them.

Noa, curious, asks:
« How does it work? »

Mila, curious, asks:
« Yes, but how? Show us how it works! »

IAlexandra says:
« I show pictures on the walls. You help me sort them. The machine learns to recognize things. »

IAlexandra shows hundreds of pictures on the walls of the Dome: cats, dogs, bikes, trees… Noa and Mila help her sort them, and soon, the artificial intelligence(4) recognizes a cat… or almost!

Learning by example

Noa and Mila sort even more pictures. IAlexandra learns fast. She recognizes cats in different positions. Sometimes, she makes a mistake.

Noa, curious, asks:
« Why does she make mistakes? »

Mila, thinking for a moment, says:
« Sometimes, she makes mistakes because she doesn't have enough examples yet. The more we show her, the better she gets! »

IAlexandra, with a pixel smile, explains:
« Sometimes, the machine makes mistakes. She learns from her mistakes. »

Noa, after thinking for a moment, says:
« We can show her more pictures. »

Mila, full of excitement, suggests:
« Yes, that's a great idea! We can show IAlexandra quick pictures so she can practice recognizing them. The more she sees, the better she'll get. »

IAlexandra, with a pixel smile, says:
« I can now tell if it’s a cat or not. The more you show me, the better I get. We have so much fun learning together! »

While IAlexandra, Noa, and Mila project hundreds of images onto the walls of the Dome, a mysterious glow comes from the floor. Curious, they follow the light and discover a cave(5) with glowing walls. Each level shows a step of thinking: first lines, then faces, then emotions. They wonder what is hidden in the deep(6) layers of the AI. Noa and Mila can't wait to find out what more the AI can learn. IAlexandra smiles at them and says they are about to explore the Deep Learning Cave, where the deepest secrets of artificial intelligence await them. The children get ready for a new adventure, eager to discover what more the AI can teach them.
