📝 Quick summary of key information

Thales of Miletus was a very smart Greek philosopher. He lived a long time ago in Greece. He loved to watch nature and ask questions about the world around him.

Thales thought that water is the first element of nature. He believed that water is the source of all living things. For him, water was the beginning of everything.

Thales watched the rivers, the rain, and the sea. He saw that water is everywhere. It flows in the rivers, falls from the sky as rain, and fills the oceans. He understood that water is essential for life.

Water is needed for plants, animals, and people to live. Without water, nothing could grow or survive. Thales was right to think that water is the source of everything.

The Secrets of Water with Thales

Why did Thales think that water is the source of everything?

Meeting Thales

Not long after discovering the shiny sphere in their school library, Sarah and Sofiane were taken to a world where ideas float like stars. After meeting Pythagoras and his singing triangles, and Aristotle with his well-organized animals, they were ready for a new adventure. This time, they were led to a sparkling river, where they met an old, wise man meditating(1) on the waves. It was Thales, a wise, curious(2), and inventive(3) man, passionate about the mysteries of nature and the secrets of ancient civilizations(4).

Thales, with a kind smile, begins to speak: « Hello, young explorers. I am Thales. You have made a long journey to meet me, haven't you? I am a wise, curious, and inventive man, passionate about the mysteries of nature and the secrets of ancient civilizations. I love exploring the forests and old alleys of my village, always looking for new discoveries. I am very smart and have a gift for solving riddles(5) and puzzles. I am also very kind and always ready to help my friends. I have gray hair and sharp green eyes. I often wear a robe with deep pockets to keep my treasures found during my explorations. I also have a little notebook where I write down all my observations and ideas. »

Sofiane, with a curious smile, says:
« Hello, I am Sofiane. »

Sarah, with a curious smile, says:
« I am Sarah. »

Thales, looking at the sparkling water, said:
« Water is everywhere and essential to life. »

Thales, with a mysterious smile, begins to explain:
« Water changes its form, going from liquid to solid or gas. »

Thales, while looking at the river, starts to explain:
« Water is in the clouds, the rivers, and even in the plants. »

After showing the importance of water and its different states, the wise old man gives them a drop of crystal-clear(6) water and shows them an ancient drawing with a water symbol – a first clue to a big mystery to solve.

The Water Experience

Sarah and Sofiane look at the drop of water. They are amazed by the beauty of the water symbol. Thales smiles, then he starts to talk.

Thales, with a smile, begins to explain:
« Have you seen this drop of water? It's beautiful, isn't it? Water is all around us, even in the clouds. It changes shape, it becomes steam and then it falls back as rain. Isn't that fascinating? »

Sofiane, curious, asks then:
« How can water be in the clouds? »

Sarah, curious, asks:
« And why is water so important for life? »

Thales, fascinated by nature, begins to explain:
« Water is in the clouds as vapor. It falls as rain and feeds the plants. »

Thales, watching the river, says:
« Water is in our bodies and in the bodies of animals. It keeps us alive. »

After listening to Thales' advice, Sarah and Sofiane are led to a mysterious room filled with chimes and glowing triangles. As they enter, they learn that math can create music thanks to the experiments of Pythagoras and his singing triangles. They are told that numbers and sounds mix to create magical harmonies(7). But before they can understand this, a new puzzle is presented to them: how can sounds create geometric shapes?
